Performance and Network Troubleshooting

Start by identifying whether the symptom is local rendering, connection quality, or host performance. The official FAQ gives a specific graphics-adjustment order and links character jitter plus voice dropouts to likely network trouble.

Quick symptom split

Low local frame rate
Adjust Render Scale, then Quality
Players jittering
Likely network issue
Voices dropping
Likely network issue
World geometry missing
Update graphics drivers
Host running poorly
Can affect the network session

Official low-frame-rate order

  • Lower Render Scale first.
  • If performance is still too low, reduce the overall Quality setting.
  • Once frame rate is stable, raise Render Scale gradually until image clarity and performance are balanced.

Network checklist

  • Close downloads, streams, cloud sync, and other bandwidth-heavy programs on the host and affected guest.
  • Move closer to the router when using Wi-Fi.
  • Use wired Ethernet where practical.
  • Retest with the group in the same open area so intended voice distance and walls are not confused with a connection fault.
  • Record which players jitter or lose voice and whether the problem follows one host.

Check the host's frame rate

The official FAQ warns that low frame rate on the host can cause network issues for the session. If several guests have problems at once, check the host's performance before troubleshooting every guest independently.

  • Apply the Render Scale and Quality sequence on the host.
  • Stop high-load background programs on the host machine.
  • Recreate the session only after the host is stable, then share the newly generated Join Code.

Characters jitter or voices cut out

The FAQ treats these as common signs of network trouble. First rule out intended spatial effects by regrouping in the same open space; then work through bandwidth, Wi-Fi distance, wired connection, and host performance.

Ocean or other world geometry is missing

The official FAQ uses a missing ocean as an example of a graphics-driver problem. Update the GPU driver from the hardware vendor, restart the system, and retest before treating the world save as damaged.

  • Record the GPU model, driver version, platform, and game version.
  • Capture a screenshot of the missing geometry.
  • Do not delete or replace the host save as the first response to a rendering symptom.

Current Steam requirement reference

Steam displayed these requirements on August 6, 2026. They are a purchasing and diagnosis reference, not proof that a particular issue is caused by hardware.

Minimum
Windows 10, 12 GB RAM, i7-7700K / Ryzen 5 1600X
Recommended
Windows 11, 16 GB RAM, i5-10600K / Ryzen 7 3700X

Useful support record

  • Game version and exact date/time.
  • Host and affected-player platforms.
  • Host or guest role and selected world size.
  • Frame rate symptom, network symptom, or missing geometry.
  • Connection type and background programs already closed.
  • Settings and driver changes already tested in order.
