Communication / spatial chat

Voice and Text Communication

Voice and text are both built into Big Walk, and both belong to the game's distance-based communication design. A player without a microphone can use text, but text is not a global channel that ignores the world around the group.

Verified communication options

The official FAQ explicitly applies the game's distance, wall, and tool rules to text as well as voice. Keep this in mind when planning a no-microphone group.

How spatial voice behaves

The official Press Kit describes voices fading with distance, echoing down corridors, and becoming muffled through walls. It also describes walkie-talkie noise. These effects are part of the intended cooperative experience, not automatically an audio fault.

  • Test voice while the group is still close together.
  • Use a clear landmark before anyone moves beyond normal speaking range.
  • Treat a wall or long corridor as a communication condition when diagnosing muffled or changed audio.

Text chat is spatial too

Text is the official alternative for players who cannot or do not want to use voice, but it is subject to the same broad environmental restrictions. A message not reaching a distant player may reflect intended range or obstruction rather than a broken text feature.

  • Keep text users physically near the group during important planning.
  • Repeat the message after regrouping before changing settings or restarting.
  • Do not assume an external global chat accurately tests whether in-game text is working.

Tools change the communication problem

The Press Kit lists walkie-talkies and megaphones among the official tools and toys. Use them as part of the game's communication design; this page does not claim exact ranges, battery rules, spawn locations, or acquisition order because those details are not published in the official material reviewed here.

Why the official FAQ recommends in-game chat

The FAQ asks groups not to replace Big Walk's communication with an external voice service, because distance, walls, and tools are part of the challenge. An external call can be an accessibility fallback agreed by the group, but it changes that intended experience.

When chat appears to fail

  • Regroup in the same open area and test voice and text again.
  • Confirm nobody is muted and that the expected input/output device is selected on the platform.
  • Update the game on every device before comparing behavior.
  • If voices repeatedly drop while characters jitter, use the network checklist; the official FAQ identifies those symptoms as likely connection trouble.
  • Record the host platform, guest platform, channel, location, and exact symptom before requesting support.
